Organizing Content with Categories & Tags
Structure Your Content for Visitors and Search Engines
Effective content organization helps visitors find what they're looking for and helps search engines understand your site's structure.
Categories: The Big Picture
Categories represent broad groupings of related content. Think of them as the sections of a newspaper – News, Sports, Entertainment, Opinion. Each article or project typically belongs to one category.
Categories affect your URL structure. An article in the 'Tutorials' category might have a URL like /tutorials/getting-started/.
Tags: The Fine Details
Tags are specific, granular labels that describe what a piece of content is about. While an article might be in the 'Tutorials' category, it could have tags like 'installation', 'beginner', 'php', and 'configuration'.
When a reader clicks on a tag, they see a listing of all the posts tagged with the tag they clicked.
Managing Categories and Tags
The Content section in the admin sidebar provides dedicated interfaces for managing both categories and tags. You can create, edit, delete, see usage counts. To see what posts fall under each category or tag, just hover your cursor on the number of posts in the table.
Best Practices
It is generally recommended to keep your category list relatively short (5-10 categories maximum) and use tags liberally. Categories should be stable and rarely change, while tags can be added freely.
